Now is the time for all who are outraged by the detention of Bradley Manning and sickened by the continuation of U.S. War crimes to be going all OUT in demanding Free Bradley Manning and Stop U.S. Wars/Occupations! Read the following to get more information about why this is urgently needed and how to be a part of this.
To put it bluntly, many of us feel that the prosecution of PFC Bradley Manning is the most important political prosecution now underway in this country. He has been accused of downloading thousands of classified reports, cables, and video, and leaking them to the famous publishing website Wikileaks. However those files got leaked, they laid bare the war crimes committed, maintained, and defended by the US government. And they have helped fuel revolts around the Middle East, Norht Africa, and beyond. For the alleged “crime” of whistle-blowing, Bradley Manning was held in solitary confinement for nearly a year and he is now charged with “aiding the enemy,” which carries with it a potential death sentence, and many other charges. There is a very real potential that a 24 year-old whistle-blower may be executed for exposing the murder and cover up of Iraqi and Afghani civilians. The information given to us allegedly by Bradley Manning through Wikileaks has shown the world without a shadow of a doubt, how corrupt and disdainful of human life our military and government are.
This is truly a historic time. Whether Bradley did what he is accused of doing, these leaks represent the most threatening action taken in decades against the secrecy under which war crimes are committed in our names. Anyone who did this is a hero and in need of our support, and given that the trial will most likely take place this fall or winter, this summer is a CRITICAL time to make as much noise as possible.
If you are even slightly interested in taking part in demonstrations this summer or have ideas for other actions, we will be meeting at 7:30 PM, Thursday, June 23 at Chicago’s LGBT community center, The Center On Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted Street. This meeting will include a report back by World Can’t Wait and the Gay Liberation Network about the June 4 demonstration at Fort Leavenworth, where Bradley Manning is being held. Gay Liberation Network will also screen its new video about that demonstration.
This is also a working meeting! World Can’t Wait is joining the Gay Liberation Network’s “Free Bradley Manning” contingent at the Pride Parade. We’ll be making plans for that and several other parades this summer. Everyone is welcome to join us! For the Pride Parade, just meet at the corner of Halsted and Diversey on Sunday, June 25, at 11 am.
